Oxymetholone is a synthetic oral steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone and is available only by prescription. It is mainly used to treat anemias caused by bone marrow failure, including aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis-related anemia, and anemia caused by certain myelotoxic drugs. The medicine works by stimulating the production of red blood cells and improving the bone marrow's response. It also promotes protein synthesis and nitrogen retention, which supports tissue building and weight gain. Treatment is taken as a tablet under a doctor's supervision, with the dose and duration set individually for each patient. Response is usually assessed over several weeks to months. It carries a boxed warning for liver toxicity and harmful changes in cholesterol levels, and it may cause fluid retention, high blood pressure, acne, and mood changes. It is not suitable for people with prostate or breast cancer, liver disease, severe kidney disease, or pregnancy. Regular blood tests, including liver function, lipids, and blood counts, are required throughout treatment. It should be used only as prescribed and never for non-medical purposes.
